Freetown Christiania
🇩🇰 Copenhagen · Culture
A former military base occupied by squatters in 1971 and never quite given back: car-free lanes, self-built houses, galleries, organic cafés and a long-running social experiment. Visitors are welcome; cameras aren't everywhere (signs mark where). Go curious and respectful — it's a neighbourhood of ~900 residents, not a theme park.

Popular, but locals still go — a good sign.
🕐 Best time: Weekday afternoons; café Månefiskeren for coffee
💡 Local tip: Follow the photo rules (clearly signed), skip Pusher Street entirely, and head deeper in — the lakeside self-built houses and Grey Hall street art are the point. The Green Light District rules are posted at every entrance; read them.
