Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial
π΅π± KrakΓ³w Β· Memorial
The largest of the Nazi German camps and the site of the murder of more than 1.1 million people, preserved since 1947 as a memorial and museum. A visit covers Auschwitz I (the brick barracks, the documentary exhibitions) and Birkenau (the vast field of the crematoria ruins, the ramp, the gate). Nearly every account β review, blog or vlog β says the same two things: it is the most important place they have ever visited, and it is not 'enjoyed'. Go with the educator-led tour; the context is essential.

Visiting with respect
This is a place of remembrance for over 1.1 million people murdered here, not a sightseeing stop. Book the official guided (educator-led) visit at visit.auschwitz.org well in advance β individual slots are free but limited. Dress and behave as you would at a funeral: quiet voices, no posed photos, no photos at the Wall of Death or inside Block 11 and the hair room. Allow 3.5β4 hours for both camps (a shuttle connects them); the Museum recommends visitors be 14 or older. Plan nothing else that day β most visitors need the evening.
π Best time: Morning entry, any season β allow the whole day
π‘ Local tip: Book direct at visit.auschwitz.org (not resellers) the moment your dates are fixed β educator-led slots in English go 1β3 months out. From KrakΓ³w: ~1h15 by direct bus from MDA station, or the museum's official options. Take water; large bags aren't allowed inside.
πΈ Price note: Third-party 'skip-the-line tours' resell the same entry with a markup β book official.

First-hand accounts: book direct and early, take the first bus, eat beforehand, and don't schedule anything after. Unanimous on the guided visit.
