Whale Watching, Skjervøy
🇳🇴 Tromsø · Nature
From late October to mid-January the herring shoals pull orcas and humpbacks into the fjords around Skjervøy, 2–3 hours north of Tromsø — some seasons in staggering numbers, feeding metres from the boats. Choose your vessel honestly: RIBs get closest but pound through swell in Arctic air; the hybrid-electric catamarans are warm, stable and better for most people. Sightings ran near-daily last three seasons but are never guaranteed.

Popular, but locals still go — a good sign.
🕐 Best time: Mid-Nov to mid-Jan, morning departures for the light
💡 Local tip: Book the Skjervøy-based departures (boat ride to the whales: 30 min) over Tromsø-departing boats (3+ hours each way in swell) — buses connect Tromsø to Skjervøy for exactly this. Seasickness tablets regardless; the fjord mouth rolls.
💸 Price note: Operators differ on 'no sighting' policies — some rebook free, some don't. Check first.
